Hurricane Florence: Woman, baby die after tree falls on house

In Craven County, authorities say they have received more than 150 telephone calls from people in the historic town of New Bern asking to be rescued because water has entered their homes.

Others were at home hoping for the best. Hundreds more were rescued elsewhere from rising water.

As of 2:00 pm (1800 GMT), maximum sustained winds had weakened to 75 miles per hour (120 kph) but the National Hurricane Center (NHC) warned Carolina residents to be alert for life-threatening storm surges and "catastrophic freshwater flooding".

NASA astronaut Ricky Arnold also captured Florence making landfall from his spot on the orbiting outpost.

According to poweroutage.us, more than 500,000 customers in North Carolina and 50,000 in SC were without power on Friday morning, though the Weather Channel estimates up to 3 million customers could lose power in the Carolinas due to Florence.

"It's an uninvited brute who doesn't want to leave", said North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper.

"WE ARE COMING TO GET YOU", the city of New Bern tweeted around 2 a.m. "We have two boats and all our worldly possessions", said Susan Patchkofsky, who refused her family's pleas to evacuate and stayed at Emerald Isle with her husband.

At 5pm, Florence was centred about 75 kilometres west-southwest of Wilmington, North Carolina, and about 45 kilometres northeast of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Hurricane-force winds extended 130km from its centre, and tropical storm-force winds reached out to 315km. "We are stuck in the attic".

About 10 million people could be affected by the storm and more than 1 million were ordered to evacuate the coasts of the Carolinas and Virginia, jamming westbound roads and highways for miles.

Right now, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Hurricane Center is predicting that Florence will become a tropical storm tomorrow (Sept. 15) over SC, continue northwest to eastern Kentucky, then swing northeast and track over most of New England early next week.

Issac is expected to slowly drift through the eastern and central Caribbean waters through the weekend, not too far from Jamaica, but won't be much of a threat.

Hurricane Florence, weakened but still unsafe, has crashed into the Carolinas on Friday as a giant, slow-moving storm that stranded residents with floodwaters and swamped part of the town of New Bern at the beginning of what could be a days-long deluge.
