Hurricane Florence Makes Landfall in N. Carolina

Hurricane Florence Makes Landfall in N. Carolina

The storm surge, water pushed by a storm over land that would normally be dry, "overwhelmed" the town of New Bern at the confluence of the Neuse and Trent rivers, Cooper said.

In a hurricane, as Live Science has reported, the most significant threat is flooding, not the high winds.

Once a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 140 miles per hour (225 kph), the hurricane was downgraded to a Category 1 on Thursday night.

"The time to prepare is nearly over", North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper told a morning news conference.

Other small boat teams were arriving in the region, including volunteers of the Cajun Navy, a network of groups from Louisiana, and Task Force 1, an urban search and rescue team based in New Jersey. Collins says they have a front loader they're using to clear the roads, but a tree went through the windshield of it.

"More people die from storm surge than any proponent of hurricanes", Kottlowsk tells TIME.

The eye of the storm reached Wrightsville Beach, several miles east of Wilmington, around 7:15 eastern time, with estimated maximum winds of 90 mph. The city tweeted early September 14 that 150 people were awaiting rescue.

More than 60 people had to be pulled from a collapsing motel at the height of the storm, and many more who defied evacuation orders were hoping to be rescued.

And they say people who are truly in an emergency should call 911, not just Tweet about it. It's the most powerful storm of 2018 so far.

Wind speeds are kicking up far from the coast in central SC as Hurricane Florence slowly makes its way along the coast.

The story was first reported by the Weather Channel.

The first, Article 11, will require tech companies to pay publishers when their content appears on services such as Google News. Supporters argue the rule will safeguard media pluralism in Europe, but major tech companies have lobbied heavily against it.

Utility officials have warned that widespread power outages are likely and that it could take weeks to restore electricity. Forecasters said "catastrophic" freshwater flooding was expected along waterways far from the coast of the Carolinas. We know how to manage expectations.

Perry says his department has been in contact with power companies and gas pipeline operators.

Trump says his administration has been in "close contact" with the state and local governments soon to be impacted by the massive storm. North Carolina corrections officials said more than 3,000 people were relocated from adult prisons and juvenile centers in the path of Florence, and more than 300 county prisoners were transferred to state facilities.

The first effects of Hurricane Florence are almost hitting the North Carolina coast.

At 2 p.m. EDT, Florence, weakening as it moves inland at 5 mph, was 35 miles west-southwest of Wilmington and 35 miles east northeast of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, packing sustained hurricane-force winds of 75 mph, the National Hurricane Center said.

Port preparations extended from Savannah, Ga., north to Baltimore, as forecasters at the National Hurricane Center issued increasingly narrowed predictions for the passage of Hurricane Florence.

Hurricane Florence has been downgraded to a tropical storm, after barreling into North Carolina with damaging winds and heavy rain, leaving at least five people dead.

Winds bent trees towards the ground and raindrops flew sideways as Florence moved in for an extended stay, with enough of its killer winds swirling overseas to maintain its power.

"WE ARE COMING TO GET YOU", New Bern city officials said on Twitter.

Cinder blocks that were part of the structure crumbled in some places, and portions of the roof were missing.

None of the people rescued were injured.
