Amir Khan dominates Samuel Vargas, wants Manny Pacquiao next

Vargas was forced back and back as the Colombian's determination to respond and meet Khan head on opened up further opportunities. He had not been taken 12 rounds since a points win over Chris Algieri in May 2015.

Amir Khan had to climb off the canvas to continue his comeback with a points win over Samuel Vargas in Birmingham. Thrilling, exciting, but always vulnerable.

After a tough fight against Vargas, Khan is now eyeing a showdown with Manny Pacquiao or Kell Brook. Goossen will surely look to bolster his fighter's defence before any meeting with Brook or Pacquiao and with Khan intent on competing again this year, time for preparing for such a step up in opponent is minimal.

There was pulsating action throughout, both men having moments of success, before scores of 119-108, 119-109 and 118-110 handed Khan a deserved victory as attention turns to who the Bolton star will face next. Vargas had other ideas though as he landed a massive right hand to floor the Brit at the end of the same session to expose all of the old vulnerabilities in shocking fashion.

Toronto-based Vargas - who now has four defeats in 35 bouts - was undoubtedly more game, but he was visibly thrown by Khan's hand speed early on.

The former world champion was making his second ring outing following an absence of nearly two years and, after brushing aside Phil Lo Greco last time out, he was given a much sterner test by Vargas.

Hearn has got Cardiff's Principality Stadium provisionally booked for December 1 and 8 but now wants to stage Khan's next fight on December 15 or 22.

"The rumours were that he pulled out of that because he couldn't even make 154lbs, so him making 147lbs is just a line he is using to get the fans back again, or win the fans over". He's the fastest fighter I've ever seen. "I want him. He is my number one pick".

From there, Khan used his jab and quick combinations on the inside to outbox Vargas, who was bleeding heavily from the nose.

"Manny and I trained together and he's a southpaw".

He added: "It could be one year, two, five or six".

A clash with his old adversary Brook has also been touted, however, Khan has suggested that a clash with the Filipino superstar would be preferable.
