State reports two dead from West Nile virus

Fortunately, roughly 80 percent of infected people won't exhibit any symptoms of the disease and only one in every 150 people will suffer from severe illness, according to the Ohio Department of Health.

While 25 people have been killed across the country as of September 4, some 262 people were affected by the fever, a statement said.

Kurt Clemens, public health inspector the local health unit, said the municipality doesn't always see human cases in a year, but said the West Nile virus is in the mosquito population and can transmit to the human population.

MS has among the highest numbers of serious West Nile infections nationwide. The disease can not be transmitted between animals and humans. To protect horses, owners in the region are advised to ask their veterinarian about the West Nile Virus vaccine. Although mosquitoes are not killed until a hard frost occurs, they are extremely unlikely to be active when temperatures fall below 50 degrees in the evening.

To date, 12 mosquito traps in York Region have tested positive for the virus this year. These are located in The Town of East Gwillimbury, Town of Georgina, Township of King, City of Markham, Town of Richmond Hill and City of Vaughan.

Through a news release the ISDH provided the following steps to help residents reduce the threat of West Nile virus in their area. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of these symptoms.
