Why Barcelona failed to sign one of their top targets

Why Barcelona failed to sign one of their top targets

Marc Overmars, the Amsterdam club's sporting director, later confirmed that Ajax rejected a package worth €50m from Tottenham.

The Catalan club were heavily interested in securing the services of the 21-year-old over the summer, having seen Atletico Madrid superstar Antoine Griezmann snub a move to Camp Nou.

The Lilywhites, who ended the summer window without any incomings, have a concrete interest in signing De Jong and are understood to have made contact with Ajax last week.

"They could come back for Frenkie in January but our players will not leave during this period".

Overmars, the former Arsenal forward, also claimed that Barca's offers were "unfortunate" and that they did not "value De Jong". The midfielder has put up a great performance to help Ajax to qualify for the Champions League this season.

In January, a Taliban-claimed suicide bombing in the capital Kabul killed at least 103. Both the Taliban and the extremist group Islamic State are active in the area.

However, Overmars is adamant de Jong will not be leaving the club, even if Barca were to make an improvement on Tottenham's offer. Despite the pressure from European giants to prise away the midfielder, Ajax has maintained their stance by not selling their most prized asset.

The report from Sport analyses Barcelona's interest in de Jong, revealing that he is seen as a potential successor to Sergio Busquets in the heart of the midfield.

He made his Netherlands debut against Peru and started against France. "Maybe someday I'll join Barcelona, but not this season", he said.

He added: "He is doing very well now, but we have often had Dutch players who first played very well, but later became less". The Dutch midfielder has scored 1 goal so far in his 37 appearances for AFC Ajax till date.
