Trump Blames ‘Inaccessible’ Puerto Rico for Hurricane Deaths of 2975 - Internet Explodes

The president has consistently applauded the Maria response, even as the estimates of deaths in Puerto Rico caused by the storm have climbed from 64 to 2,975 people, making it the deadliest hurricane to hit America in more than a century.

About 20,000 pallets of water bottles shipped to Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria devastated the island previous year went unused and eventually became too contaminated to drink, officials from the US territory said on Wednesday.

The revelation comes as President Trump doubled down on his administration's response to Hurricane Maria on Wednesday and lashed out at the mayor of San Juan, who has been a critic of the effort, as "incompetent".

Ms Cruz shot back: "If he thinks the death of 3,000 people is a success God help us all". "We were 'buying" water because they wouldn't give it to us".

In Maria's aftermath, according to FEMA data analyzed by the AP, approvals for individual assistance checks in Puerto Rico were slower compared with what happened with large storms past year.

At the time, the administration committed to a more aggressive response to storms that struck Texas, even as that situation there became more manageable and Puerto Rico desperately needed more assistance.

For Maria, there was a large gap between when the first loan was approved and when loans started ramping up.

"The poll results were published the same day that Trump praised his administration's handling of the Hurricane Maria aftermath".

Islanders have also been angered by recent discoveries of supplies that never got delivered.

"The historical relationship between Puerto Rico and Washington is unfair and un-American".

A study published last month from George Washington University's Milken Institute School of Public Health, which was commissioned by the Puerto Rican government, found that government emergency plans in place when Maria hit were not designed for hurricanes greater than a Category 1. He said some of it was distributed but people complained that it smelled bad.

Bernie Sanders added:"Nearly 3,000 people died".

Hurricane Maria, which struck Puerto Rico in September 2017, killed an estimated 3,000 people in the US territory and some officials there were critical of Trump's claim of a successful aid effort. "It bothers me and it hurts".
