Square Enix announces The Last Remnant Remastered, launches this year in Japan

The Last Remnant didn't feature any obviously licensed products, making its removal all the more suspicious.

Square Enix are dusting off another classic RPG and giving a bit of a tickle, The Last Remnant will be coming to PlayStation 4 "fully remastered" for the console, whatever that means.

The Last Remnant was supposed to be released on the PlayStation 3, but that never happened, probably due to the middling reviews the game garnered. "Within this war-torn fantasy world, players will follow the journey of a young man who is determined to uncover the truth", Square continued.

The original Xbox 360 version was praised for its intricate battle system and handsome art, but it was held back by glaring technical issues.

Throughout my career in gaming, few games (not just JRPGs) have challenged me the way that The Last Remnant did nearly 10 years ago. It was ported to PC in 2009.

Due out digitally on December 6 in Japan.

The Last Remnant Remastered uses Unreal Engine 4, and the story revolves around ancient artifacts called "Remnants", which grant huge power to the wielder. It also says The Last Remnant: Remastered is launching on PlayStation 4 on December 6, with no other platforms listed.

Below you can enjoy the trailer for the North American market, alongside a batch of screenshots showing the enhanced visuals. It can be purchased for $20.
