England boss Gareth Southgate reviews win over Switzerland

England struggled to get Loftus-Cheek on the ball in risky positions in the first half and when they did, he was unable to do much with it, often showing an inability to turn when presented with the ball with his back to goal.

But if nothing changes he admits he will have to think long and hard about picking those who have been left stuck on the sidelines for next month's Nations League trips to Croatia and Spain. He had left [Riyad] Mahrez out of the team, so he needed to get him on because he [Mahrez] is still adapting to the way of playing. They have to try to win matches.

But after scoring in Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Spain and the victor against Switzerland on Tuesday, he can be assured he will stay in Southgate's squad for the time being.

"We all weren't happy with the performance, we gave them too much respect with the ball. It is even more complicated".

Southgate also reserved praise for Rashford, who built on his goal against Spain at the weekend with a tidy finish to win Tuesday's game after what has been a frustrating start to the season for the Manchester United youngster.

"He's got huge competition for places at his club so you can understand that", Southgate said. They have to rotate their squads. "José [Mourinho] thinks the world of Marcus - he's a huge admirer of him - but he has his job to do".

It's something the students need to learn and discuss, and that's what we've done. But it's the principle, Caner said, that's important to the university.

Operating in support of Danny Welbeck at the sharp end of a 3-5-2 system, Rashford was England's liveliest player throughout, and looked their most likely source of a goal even before he netted for the fifth time in global football. However, Southgate floated the idea of trying to fit all three into the same side, an idea that would probably mean Sterling switching to another position.

"If I'm in the Championship beyond this season, then obviously things start to get a bit trickier, but certainly for this year he's reassured me that if I can keep my standards high, I can be a part of the team".

"His confidence will be boosted with two goals against top-quality opposition".

Although Kane didn't pick up an injury, Spurs really could have done with Kane sitting the match out.

"We are going to have to assess that each time".
