Dramatic twists as pope meets with US cardinals over sex abuse

While Pope Francis has refused to respond to Vigano's allegations so far, the Vatican said Monday that he was "formulating the eventual and necessary clarifications".

There were no details on the specific allegations against Bransfield and neither he nor his legal representatives could immediately be reached for comment.

DiNardo requested a full-fledged Vatican investigation into the McCarrick affair, and said he also wanted answers to allegations that a string of Vatican officials knew of McCarrick's misdeeds since 2000, but turned a blind eye.

The pope's former apostolic nuncio to the United States, Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, accused the pope of knowing about and ignoring sanctions placed on then-Cardinal McCarrick by Pope Benedict XVI due to his sexual misconduct with seminarians.

Following a private audience with Pope Francis on Thursday morning in Vatican City, Cardinal Daniel DiNardo of Galveston-Houston and President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops issued the following statement regarding the recent moral crisis in the American Catholic Church.

In the U.S., a grand jury report released last month from Pennsylvania found that more than 300 priests had sexually abused minors in the state over seven decades.

Pope Francis is sending Baltimore Archbishop William E. Lori to the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston in West Virginia, where he will head an investigation into allegations of sexual harassment.

Trump warns Americans: Don't 'play games' with Hurricane Florence
They have sat in Ceiba, Puerto Rico, one of the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Maria, ever since, he said in a Facebook post. Cruz quickly responded, implying that the president was out of touch with what had really happened in Puerto Rico.

It required accusations of abuse to be reported to police and the permanent removal from ministry of any priest found to have abused a minor.

Hours after Vigano made the statement to conservative Catholic news media, Francis had told journalists he "won't say a word" about the sensational claims.

The past of the Catholic Church is being dug up in other countries.

Bransfield denied the allegations, and the Wheeling-Charleston diocese issued a statement in July 2012 saying they had identified the boy in the vehicle and he had denied any abuse. Many cases were not brought to justice, and sometimes abuse suspects - primarily priests - were moved to other dioceses without new congregations being informed about the pastor's past, they said.

The grand jury report also came after a host of allegations against former Washington archbishop Theodore McCarrick, including that he molested a teenager.

DiNardo has called for the Vatican to launch an investigation, known as an "apostolic visitation", into how McCarrick could have risen steadily through the ranks of the USA church although many people knew that he had engaged for years in sexual misconduct with adult male seminarians.
