A ‘mass shooting’ in Bakersfield as a husband turns on his wife

Authorities say a gunman in California has killed five people, including his wife, before turning the gun on himself as a sheriff's deputy closed in.

A man went on a shooting rampage in California on Wednesday (Sept 12), killing five people including his wife, before taking his own life, a police spokesman told AFP. There is no information yet if the other four were related to the attacker.

He said the gunman then went to a home where he shot two people.

He then carjacked a woman who was driving with her child. USA TODAY reports that the suspect got out of the vehicle with a large-caliber handgun but before he could be arrested, he turned the gun on himself and shot himself in the chest.

Youngblood said the officer who confronted the suspect after the carjacking wore a body camera, but the footage has not been released. The mother and child were able to escape unharmed, Youngblood said.

He said some of it was distributed but people complained that it smelled bad. Bernie Sanders added:" Nearly 3 ,000 people died".

Investigators are questioning around 30 witnesses in the case. He took that vehicle and drove to Edison Highway, where a deputy saw him and confronted him.

"It's very unusual to have six people killed in one incident", the lawman said.

"We need to find out where this started...obviously these are not random shootings".

"It happened rather quickly of course", Youngblood said.

"There was some type of situation that caused the husband to be extremely upset", Kern County Sheriff said. "Our entire community, with one heavy heart, is praying for the victims and their families", he wrote.
