Djokovic was thrilled to match Sampras with a 14th Grand Slam title at the US Open Sunday, but he said it's Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal who have made him the player he is. I guess we'll be hiking some more very soon!'

Osaka, the 20-year-old, who leaped ahead following her victory over 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams in the finals of the US Open, has become the youngest player to make her place in the list of top 20 players, WTA official website reported.

"Pete Sampras is one of the biggest legends ever to play the game", Djokovic said.

"When I was a kid, I mixed watching soccer and the U.S. Open, that's it", Del Potro said before the match.

And yet, after the events that unfolded in Saturday's women's final at Flushing Meadow, no one - not the players, the officials, administrators, the fans or the sport itself - emerged as a victor.

The final went off without a hitch, much to the relief of chair umpire Alison Hughes and tournament officials, a day after Serena Williams clashed with umpire Carlos Ramos in the controversial women's final. The atmosphere had finally got to him as he dropped three consecutive games after not facing a single break point in the first set.

When he led 3-1 in the second, Djokovic appeared to be cruising to a 15th win in 19 attempts against del Potro.

Novak Djokovic will be seeking his 14th Grand Slam title and Juan Martin del Potro his second when they meet in the U.S. Open final.

His opponent? Juan Martin del Potro, the 2009 Open champ, whose own comeback story is arguably even more compelling than Djokovic's.

Chelsea boss Sarri say he is loving life in the Premier League
Rabiot has been very good to start this season, better than all but seven Ligue 1 players in a small sample size. These kinds of players give a different story about Chelsea than the way we knew Chelsea before.

Never was that more apparent than the game that stood out on this evening, with Djokovic serving while down 4-3 in the second set. The first actual thing I saw related to tennis on the TV was his first or second Wimbledon championship.

However, the underdog dialled up his intensity to great effect - that massive forehand clicking into gear - and was aided by significant crowd support as he capitalized on a brief dip in Djokovic's form to get back on level terms.

"I was playing nearly at the limit, all the time, looking for winners with my forehands, backhands, and I couldn't make it", del Potro said, "because Novak (was) there every time".

"I was so close to the desired level, and then I completely underplayed that match".

Sampras beat Australian Roy Emerson's 33-year record of 13 Grand Slam titles by winning Wimbledon in 2000, extending it by winning the 2002 US Open - the final tournament of his career.

Nadal hobbled out of a semi-final match against Del Potro after two sets. "I've spent all my career learning with Novak, Roger, Rafa, seeing them winning these events very often. I was just trying to focus on myself at that time".

"I was hoping he's going to be here tonight but I want to say 'Pete, I love you, you're my idol, '" said the Serb.

'I have utmost respect for what they have achieved on the court, but also the champions, role models they are off the court. "It will be in the heart for the rest of the life".
