Justin Rose is new world number one despite agony at BMW Championship

A "delighted" Justin Rose of Britain assured the world number one ranking for the first time in his career Monday with a solo runner-up finish at the PGA BMW Championship.

Bradley parred the first extra hole to edge Rose after the pair had finished regulation on 20-under 260 at a waterlogged Aronimink Golf Club in Philadelphia.

Rose held a one stroke advantage going into the final hole but a bogey meant it went down to a playoff.

"I've played a few tournaments (this year) where I was close at the end", Woods said, whose missed opportunities to win this year include the Arnold Palmer Invitational, British Open and PGA Championship.

Bradley, 32, burst onto the scene with a Major victory at the 2011 PGA Championship, but had not won since 2012 before Monday.

"A lot of hard work I've done with my coach Grant (Field) is paying off at the right time of the season". Rory McIlroy (68) finished two shots behind, while Tiger Woods (65) was three back. "It's (the stuff of) boyhood dreams".

Spieth, 25, came into the week in the top 30 in points but couldn't recover from a second-round 71 in which he was one of just six players to shoot over par.

Andy Murray kicked a ball at an umpire's head during a 2016 match, but did not get a code or point penalty. Williams was then penalized a second time after accusing umpire Carlos Ramos of lying.

American 14-time major victor Tiger Woods closed with a 65, moving up to a share of sixth, one shot behind McIlroy.

"I talked to the Tour a little while back and I didn't really think much of it and it becomes a situation then".

Spieth began the year ranked second in the world but has dropped to 10th after failing to win and posting just five top-10 finishes. That put him in violation of a new PGA Tour rule created to route big-name players to smaller events.

Meanwhile, Justin Rose said he would have like to reach the number one position by winning the BMW Championship.

"But at the end of the season, to say that I made it to the Tour Championship after what I've been through is a pretty good accomplishment", Woods added.

Spieth now faces potential sanctions from the PGA Tour for failing to play 25 events in the 2017-18 season.

"It has been tough to go from being on Ryder Cup teams, being on Presidents Cup teams, to outside the top 100 in the world".
