Champions League, Europa League...and now another one!

Champions League, Europa League...and now another one!

Details are yet to be released, but the tournament is expected to start from 2021/22 season pending the final approval.

With 48 sides now involved in the Europa League group stage, that would likely mean that competition being reduced to 32 teams, with the same number competing in the Champions League group stage and the new competition.

Under the new format, the Europa League's group stage will be reduced from 48 teams to 32, with the new competition and the Champions League all having the same number.

The chairman of the European Club Association, Andrea Agnelli, confirmed these plans.

In July, UEFA's disciplinary tribunal gave the club a one-year ban from European competition, which was deferred for a probationary period of two years.

It is more likely that it will be a Champions League-lite, with entry limited to teams from Europe's weaker national leagues.

It means smaller clubs from smaller nations will have the chance to compete in Europe, although there's undoubtedly a financial aspect behind the proposals.

"These new regulations will be even more effective than the ones we had in place which delivered astonishing results which have just been announced by UEFA", said Agnelli.

"The current model needs modernising", said Agnelli, 42.

"A detailed assessment of the existing International Match Calendar is required prior to presenting a new model post-2024", he said.

Formerly known as European Professional Football Leagues, the organisation's members include the English Football League, Premier League and Scottish Professional Football League, as well as leagues from 23 other countries.

Here's how football fans have been reacting to the shock announcement.
