Cousins, Vikings hold on for victory vs. 49ers

The Minnesota Vikings began the 2018 season on the right foot with an impressive 24-16 win over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday afternoon.

Vikings defensive end Danielle Hunter said that as the relentless pass rush kept coming after Garoppolo, he started to look afraid of getting hit.

22 yard touchdown reception by Dante Pettis for his first career reception and first career touchdown.

Cousins took a shoulder to the back from 49ers linebacker Elijah Lee as he tumbled to the turf and came up just short, a risky way for a franchise quarterback to try to move the chains, but his determination to experience victory in his Vikings debut on Sunday afternoon was not to be reasoned with.

Garoppolo was consistently under pressure from the vaunted Vikings defense, who sacked him three times. This was all capped off by Pro Bowl safety Harrison Smith taking advantage of a wobbly thrown pass in traffic that he picked off to seal the game.

"We had played too hard at that point to just slide early and give up on that", Cousins said.

Dez Bryant explains why he wants to play for the Patriots
The NFL season officially began Sunday for most of the NFL, and it all happened without Dez Bryant being on an active roster. But Bryant went out to dispel any notion that this was a pitch or a plea to the Patriots to sign him.

A lot went wrong for the 49ers on that play.

The Vikings used their star-stacked defense to finish 13-3 past year and reach the NFC championship game, leading the National Football League in fewest yards and points allowed and third down conversions against.

"Sometimes we didn't get to the second level", head coach Mike Zimmer said.

In the third quarter, when Kendrick Bourne lost his footing on a sideline route, Garoppolo's pass sailed straight to Vikings rookie Mike Hughes for a 28-yard interception return for a touchdown and a 17-3 lead.

Tight end George Kittle had five catches for 90 yards, but the one he didn't make for the 49ers stood out. Wide open up the seam, Kittle had what would've been a 30-yard completion fall off his fingers at midfield. After Mike Person (second quarter) and Joshua Garnett (third quarter) went out, rookie right tackle Mike McGlinchey had to slide over for the first action at guard of his life as Gary Gilliam entered at right tackle. "I think he did an admirable job".
