Trump warns of ‘devastating’ taxes on Canadian cars

Mexico and the United States last week said they had reached a deal after more than a year's negotiations to revamp the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

Larry Kudlow, President Donald Trump's top economic adviser, told Fox Business that one issue is holding up a US-Canada trade deal: milk.

Canada and the U.S. need to present an agreed-upon text to the U.S. Congress by October 1 in order to join the deal the Trump administration signed with Mexico.

A Canadian official who spoke on condition of anonymity on Friday said the dairy issue is indeed one of the matters that has not been resolved.

In NAFTA negotiations, the U.S. made increased access for American dairy farmers a major goal.

Trump has notified Congress he intends to sign the trade deal reached last week with Mexico by the end of November, and officials said the text would be published by around October 1.

"We're down to three issues: Chapter 19, the cultural issues and dairy".

Recent reports suggest that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau may make some concessions on the dairy front, such as opening up access to the Canadian market for U.S. farmers. "We're all working hard and I think the United States would rather have a trade deal with Canada, but it has to be a good deal".

"I'm just saying, 'Let go".

Freeland told reporters as she headed in for a second day of talks with USA trade negotiator Robert Lighthgizer that officials from both sides had worked on technical issues overnight.

A small group of state Farm Bureau President's met with the administration this week and walked away with a positive view that an agreement could quickly be made, along with the future of trade talks with Japan, the European Union and even China. She has repeatedly hailed the constructive atmosphere of talks while typically avoiding specifics.

It was part of a familiar rhythm that has taken hold this week during her time in Washington - back and forth between the two locations, while officials continue the nitty gritty negotiations, and Trudeau is kept in the loop in Ottawa.

Canada is attempting to preserve NAFTA Chapter 19, a dispute settlement system that allows the three NAFTA members - Canada, the USA, and Mexico - to file complaints against other members for unfair trade practices, like tariffs.

The overall goal of this week's talks is to reach a deal by December 1 so Congress can give its approval to a revised three-country NAFTA before Mexico's new president takes office.

Mr. Trump's economic chief, Larry Kudlow, said the USA still had to see more dairy concessions from Canada before it would agree to a deal. On December 1, Mexico's radical leftist President-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) will be sworn in, making November 30 Peña Nieto's last full day in office.

"We do love Canada", Trump told supporters at a rally in Montana on Thursday night. "Now, they've got to treat us fairly". "We're going to make a fair deal with Canada, just like we did with Mexico".

Trump has threatened to push ahead with a bilateral deal with Mexico, effectively killing the three-country NAFTA pact, which covers $1.2 trillion in trade.

"We're replacing NAFTA with a attractive new brand, because it's a much different deal".

Data released on Wednesday showed the USA trade deficit hit a five-month high of $50 billion.

"Canada has made business for our dairy farmers in Wisconsin and other border states very hard", Trump tweeted in April.

Trump has claimed that the 1994 NAFTA pact has caused the loss of hundreds of thousands of U.S.jobs, something that most economists dispute.
