Tropical Storm Florence prompts North Carolina State of Emergency

As of the 11 a.m. Saturday advisory, Florence had maximum sustained winds of 65 miles per hour and was moving to the west at 7 miles per hour. The National Hurricane Center has high confidence that this system will strengthen rapidly Sunday and Monday, and approach the southeastern coast as a category 4 or 5 storm. Eastern Daylight Time on Sunday, September 9, 2018, due to the presence of Hurricane Florence over the Atlantic Ocean.

Governors in both SC and Virginia declared a state of emergency Saturday to give their states time to prepare for the possible arrival of the storm.

Swells generated by Florence already were impacting Bermuda and starting to reach the U.S. coast, with life-threatening surf and rip current conditions likely, according to the NHC.

Hennen said computer models agree Florence is on track to hit the Carolinas.

A landfall is expected Thursday night or Friday morning along the coast of SC or North Carolina.

Swells from the storm, which are likely to cause life-threatening conditions, are already beginning to affect the East Coast.

At present, forecasters said that the storm is located 750 miles southeast of Bermuda, and it is forecast to move over the southwestern Atlantic Ocean between the Bahamas and Bermuda on September 11 and September 12 before getting close to the southeastern USA coastline.

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster also declared a state of emergency Saturday, and temporarily suspended regulations for vehicles transporting supplies and utilities - like gas, electricity and medical supplies, among others.

The NWS advises people to review their hurricane plans and monitor the storm closely.

As for Florence, the hurricane center said Saturday morning that "gradual restrengthening is forecast over the weekend".

Tropical Storm Florence is expected to grow into an "extremely dangerous" hurricane by Monday (Sept 10) as it approaches the US East Coast, the National Hurricane Centre (NHC) said, urging residents to make preparations.

The governors of Virginia, North Carolina and SC have declared states of emergency.

Another tropical storm has now developed in the Atlantic and could possibly hit the British Virgin Islands as a hurricane in the next few days. As a result, a Hurricane Watch and Tropical Storm Warning are in effect for the Cabo Verde islands of Santiago, Fogo and Brava.
