Obama speaks at rally for Democratic congressional candidates in California

"Over the past few decades, the politics of division, of resentment and paranoia has unfortunately found a home in the Republican Party", Obama said."It did not start with Donald Trump. He gets the attention off Trump, and reminds Republicans why it's important to vote in the midterms".

"We're kicking off our bedroom slippers and we're gonna put on our marching shoes", Obama said, chiding those who might have been "a little bit lazy" about performing their duties as citizens. But here is the good news: "In two months [midterm elections], we have the chance - not the certainty, but the chance - to restore some semblance of sanity to our politics". "We have a chance to flip the House of Representatives".

Obama also said that the message would not just be focused on die-hard Democrats.

"We're supposed to stand up to discrimination", Obama said.

The result is a strategy of big events in blue corners of the country, quiet fundraisers with donors and a series of digital videos or robo-calls, meant to drive Democratic attention and turnout in a targeted way.

He also pointed out, in reaction to Obama's invocation of Fox News, that even though the former president never called the network the enemy of the people, the targeting of reporter James Rosen.

The former president was stumping for Democrats Josh Harder, TJ Cox, Katie Hill, Gil Cisneros, Katie Porter, Harley Rouda and Mike Levin, all of whom are running in Republican-held districts won by Clinton in 2016. "That unfortunately has been a spiral that we have been on for the last couple of years".

"Jeff should be investigating who the author of that piece was because I really believe it's national security", Trump said, adding he does not want the author in meetings requiring a high-level security clearance.

August jobs growth tops expectations, unemployment holds near 18-year low
That lowered the participation rate, or share of working-age people in the labor force, to 62.7% from 62.9% the prior month. Industries such as health care, business services and wholesale trade saw significant job gains over the past month.

The most interesting argument in Obama's speech in IL today was that both these conclusions are wrong.

"You happen to be coming of age during one of those moments", Obama told the audience.

Obama ridiculed Trump for taking credit for economic gains that began under Obama's administration, and said Trump was exploiting cultural fears and economic anger that have grown in recent years amid societal upheavals.

"Out of this political darkness I am seeing a great awakening of citizenship all across the country", Obama said.

"I'm asking you to be neither blind to, nor dismayed by, reality - but motivated by it", Obama wrote in an email Thursday to supporters of Organizing for America, a grass roots organization he founded.

I would not be surprised if Obama - as long as he is in IL - does some campaigning with Democratic governor nominee J.B. Pritzker.

"It is an incredible honor to be endorsed by President Obama". However, he stated the political moment was a pivotel one and that it required all American citizens to determine what they stood for.

Of course, Obama, recognized that there are those in the Republican Party who are opposed to Trump, but they "seem utterly unwilling to find the backbone to safeguard the institutions that make our democracy work". Lindsey Graham, an ally and sometimes critic of Trump said in a statement after the speech.
