Hurricane strengthens to Category 4, on track to barrel into Carolinas

The NHC added that Florence, which reached major hurricane status several days ago but weakened into a tropical storm, now has an eye. Florence has maximum sustained winds of 105 miles per hour, though that number is likely to increase as the storm strengthens.

According to the noon-time update from the NHC, operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Florence now has sustained winds of almost 130 miles per hour and has no become what the agency considers "a major hurricane".

Both hurricanes have joined the major Category 4 hurricane Florence in the Atlantic Basin.

The NHC said there is "an increasing risk of life-threatening impacts for Florence", citing "storm surge at the coast, freshwater flooding from a prolonged and exceptionally heavy rainfall event inland and damaging hurricane force winds".

Highways will be reversed so everyone can get out, 'no one in.' McMaster said he's expecting a million people will evacuate.

At noon Monday, a mandatory evacuation order was issued for North Carolina's Hatteras Island.

"We here in North Carolina are bracing for a hard hit", Cooper said during a press conference outlining the state's preparations.

There have been many years when multiple tropical cyclones develop in succession like a tropical Congo line dancing across the Atlantic Ocean.
