Hurricane Olivia heads toward Hawaii as Norman slows

On Friday, the National Weather Service released its Hawaii area analysis that noted light and variable winds are "expected tonight through Monday, as Hurricane Norman passes northeast of the state".

Olivia, now a Category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, is projected to reach the islands Wednesday morning, although the storm is expected to weaken over the next several days. Olivia is moving toward the west-northwest near 16 miles per hour, and is expected to keep on this path until it makes a gradual turn toward the west is expected Saturday night or Sunday, the National Hurricane Center said.

The NHC said Olivia will weaken further over the weekend, and possibly downgrade to a tropical storm by Tuesday. Hurricane Lane dropped more than 50 inches of rain across the Big Island last month.

The storm was expected to bring rain and high surf rising to rise up to 18 feet on east-facing shores of Hawaii Island and Maui.
