Hurricane Lane: Hawaii's Big Island soaked with foot of rain

Residents are already coping with the three-month eruption of Kilauea on the Big Island, which was expected to start feeling the force of Lane's driving rains by late Wednesday afternoon. "Be safe!" he tweeted.

A direct hit could bring the U.S. Pacific island state's worst storm in a quarter century, forecasters said.

The heaviest rain is moving into New England on Wednesday morning and some isolated flash flooding is possible. Timing and local wind conditions vary between the islands and will depend greatly on the intensity and track Lane takes.

"It's not a question of whether they're going to be hit or not", Brock Long, the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) told a press briefing. State officials are urging residents and visitors to heed warnings.

A National Weather Service update Tuesday says Hurricane Lane is Category 4 storm about 400 miles (644 kilometers) southeast of the Big Island and about 575 miles (925 kilometers) from Honolulu.

The state closed all government offices on Maui and the Big Island starting Wednesday. Many were also boarding up their houses.

Hawaii's Big Island is seeing the first effects of approaching Hurricane Lane's outer rain bands.

Hurricane brings rare watches, warnings to Hawaii

"I helped out with Hurricane Iniki, I was in the military and came over here when they had the devastation, so I kind of see the after effects of it", he said. Note that the strands are clustered together where the forecast track is most confident, but they diverge where the course of the storm is less certain.

Devastation caused by winds and flooding may make locations uninhabitable for weeks and authorities warned Hawaii residents to be prepared to evacuate their homes.

At the Hilton Hawaiian Village, guest Elisabeth Brinson said hotel staff left a notice that rooms will still have water and phone service, and a backup generator would power one elevator per building in the event of an electrical outage.

It declares counties of "Hawai'i, Maui, Kalawao, Kaua'i and the City and County of Honolulu disaster areas for the objective of implementing emergency management functions", his office said.

After the mission landed safely in Hawaii, Bucci tweeted that it was "a strong and risky storm".

Meanwhile the US Navy said some of its ships and submarines based in Hawaii had begun to deploy to avoid getting caught in the storm.
