Chaotic scenes as dozens of police chase man on French runway

The driver was said to have been driving down the road in the wrong direction and caused "several accidents" before "forcing a toll barrier" and then two doors to gain entrance to the airport.

France's Lyon Airport temporarily closed its runway on Monday as police chased an intruder who had rammed a vehicle through a terminal building.

More than a dozen police cars and a helicopter pursued the fugitive up the wrong side of a motorway before he broke through security barriers at the Lyon Saint Exupery worldwide airport.

He was later detained.

Police sources told French media that the situation on the runway was "complicated".

According to local daily Lyon Capitale, a witness described how the man in question crashed through a glass barrier in Saint-Exupéry's Terminal One.

Extraordinary footage shared online shows the dramatic moment dozens of police officers give chase across the tarmac. The driver then jumped out while the vehicle was still rolling and sprinted off on foot, pursued by a police van.

Early reports suggest a man has been arrested at the scene.

Multiple police officers, police cars, and a helicopter chased him before ultimately detaining him, Reuters reported, citing police.
