Moscow reportedly sent a written note to the US on Thursday warning that it would carry out "precision strikes" on militants around the at-Tanf area despite a roughly 55-kilometer (34-mile) deconfliction zone around the base. "However, if attacked, the United States will not hesitate to use necessary and proportionate force to defend U.S., coalition or partner forces", a defense official told CNN. The base is used by USA special forces to train Syrian fighters who are confronting Islamic State militants.

US President Donald Trump has warned Syria's President Assad and his allies Iran and Russian Federation not to launch a "reckless attack" to the Idlib province, as it would result in hundreds of thousands of people killed. Given its location near the borders of Syria, Jordan and Iraq, the At Tanf garrison is seen as a key strategic location as the US, Iran and Russian Federation compete for influence in the region. But with an imminent Russian-backed assault by Syrian regime forces in the Idlib area in the north, there is concern Moscow could see this as an optimum time to conduct multiple offensive operations.

The games were launched out of the at-Tanf garrison near the Iraqi border and included an aerial assault and about 100 USA troops who will conduct a live fire exercise before departing the airbase.

One of the captive said they were trained by United States instructors and received weapons and ammunition from the U.S. base.

Brown further stated that Russian military officials first notified the United States on September 1 through a special communication channel "that they meant to enter the At-Tanf deconfliction zone to pursue terrorists".

So far, no buildup of Russian ground forces has been observed in recent days, officials said.

The drills come just one day after Russian Federation accused coalition forces of harboring terrorists in the area and threatened to conduct operations and launch precision strikes around a key anti-ISIS coalition base in At Tanf. USA officials have warned that the use of chemical weapons by Assad's forces against the enclave would result in US reprisals.

"The U.S. does not require any assistance in our efforts to destroy [Islamic State] in the At Tanf deconflicition zone, and we advised the Russians to remain clear", Brown said.

The unexpected military exercise comes as the Donald Trump administration has given stern warnings over an assault in Idlib province.

Information is not officially confirmed, reported CNN, citing several representatives of the Ministry of defense.

The United States does not seek to engage in battle with the Syrian government and those who supports him.

While most of the Syrian War is centered at this point around the Idlib Province, the last major rebel bastion, there is also interest in mopping up some of the smaller rebel positions along the Jordan border, especially where ISIS and al-Qaeda are concerned.
