Boris Johnson has separated from his wife of 25 years, Marina Wheeler, with the couple now in the process of divorcing, the pair have announced.

It comes after The Sun revealed that Mr Johnson, considered a future prime minister by some Conservative supporters, was no longer living with his wife.

"We have subsequently agreed to divorce and that process is under way", the statement said, according to the Press Association.

The Sun reported that their fashion journalist daughter, 25-year-old Lara, said her mother will "never take him back" after a latest fling.

Johnson has been accused of affairs in the past, and married Wheeler in 1993 after meeting her during his first marriage to Allegra Mostyn-Owen.

'As friends we will continue to support our four children in the years ahead.

Wheeler - a barrister who specialises in administrative and public law and family law cases - is Johnson's second wife. "We will not be commenting further", it added.

He met his first wife Allegra Mostyn-Owen while they were students at Oxford, and they Wednesday in 1987, but the marriage was annulled in 1993 and he married Ms Wheeler later that year.

Johnson is thought to be plotting a return to frontline politics following his resignation over Theresa May's Brexit plan in July.

They said: "This will be a hard divorce and will put an end to the four freedoms Johnson has enjoyed in the union".
