US Open: Story of the first round

The 33-year-old, whose three Grand Slam titles have earned him something resembling adjunct status to the Big Four, upset eighth-seeded Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov 6-3, 6-2, 7-5.

Nadal had won the first set in tidy fashion, 6-3, but Ferrer was leading 4-3 in the second when he bowed out complaining of a calf injury.

Almost 14 months after his last grand slam appearance and nearly nine months on from hip surgery, Murray battled past the Australian, James Duckworth, easing into the second round with a 6-7, 6-3, 7-5, 6-3 victory.

Speaking after his first round win over James Duckworth, Murray said: 'I was pumped to be back playing in a slam again.

It was also a winning return for Swiss Stan Wawrinka, who was not able to defend his 2016 US Open title past year because of a knee injury that kept him out for the second half of the season. "I would have played more matches in the build-up to the tournament".

Murray's shots lack the penetration of old, while his second serve often barely crept above 70 miles per hour, but his movement is improving all the time.

Defending US Open champion Rafael Nadal sent close friend David Ferrer into Grand Slam retirement on Monday when his veteran compatriot was forced to quit their first round match with injury, but former winners Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka made successful returns to NY.

The former world number three was clearly struggling with a left calf injury and retired in the second set after fellow Spaniard Nadal had taken the opener 6-3. "I have great memories of this tournament and I am just sorry that I couldn't finish it tonight".

"Then I made a change on the return games - started standing further back to give me more time".

In the fourth set I made things a bit harder than I needed to and I also had a chance to close out the first set. The American arrived at his home grand slam on an eight-match losing streak dating back to May.

Greek rising star Stefanos Tsitsipas won his first main-draw match at Flushing Meadows, beating veteran qualifier Tommy Robredo 6-3 7-6 (7-1) 6-4, while there was an emphatic 6-0 6-3 6-4 victory over Donald Young for third seed Juan Martin del Potro. Ferrer, 36, has indicated this was to be his final major tournament.

Shapovalov consoled and embraced Auger-Aliassime, who retired due to illness when trailing 7-5 5-7 4-1. Unfortunately for Auger-Aliassime, it ended with him retiring in the third set with heart palpitations. After dropping the first set in a tie-break, it was always going to be a tough day for Murray, although he did very well from that point on to gradually gain ascendance and ultimately grind Duckworth down in four sets.
