McSally fends off challenges to win GOP Senate nomination in Arizona

The primary election on Tuesday was the end of a months-long campaign season to fill the seat for U.S. Sen.

The marque Senate race between Democratic Sen. Jeff Flake, who is retiring after his fierce criticism of Trump made his political future in the state untenable.

The contest could be critical to the balance of power in the Senate in November because the Arizona seat of retiring Republican Jeff Flake, a Trump critic, is considered one of the two top takeover targets for Democrats, along with Nevada.

In Arizona, a Republican Senate candidate's reaction to Sen.

And in Florida, a shooting in Jacksonville on Sunday could amplify the issue of gun control in many races this fall following the attack at a Parkland, Fla., high school earlier this year that killed 17 students and staff.

The primary happened in the shadow of the death of Arizona's senior senator, John McCain, whose body will lie at the Arizona Capitol on Wednesday.

As with other states throughout this election cycle, early turnout has been strong.

In a year where Senate Democrats are playing defense, the Arizona seat offers a rare pickup opportunity that could help them maintain the status quo of a narrowly divided Senate or even tip them into the majority. The President's endorsement of Rep. Ron DeSantis immediately affected the GOP contest to replace Gov. Rick Scott.

Trump yesterday reiterated his support for DeSantis in a tweet. Will it be south Florida Democrats or panhandle Republicans who turn out in numbers closer to presidential year voting? Then she turned sharply to her opponent, who she nicknamed "Hollywood Sinema" in a jab at the Democrat's transformation from liberal to moderate.

It's always been my dream to wear a tutu, and I can't wait to wear it on court", she said according to Vogue . When asked if she understood what Giudicelli might have meant when he spoke about respect, Williams demurred.

In Arizona, a Southwestern state that Trump won by four percentage points in the 2016 White House race, Republican establishment favorite US Representative Martha McSally has led consistently in opinion polls over former state Senator Kelli Ward and former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Arpaio gained notoriety for his crackdowns on illegal immigration, which his agency continued in defiance of a court order that they amounted to racial profiling. Bill Clinton was the last Democratic presidential nominee to carry Arizona in 1996.

"I have hopes that he'll stand up against the NRA and do what voters need", Roman, a lawyer, said.

Scott faces only token opposition in yesterday's primary; Nelson is unopposed.

Republican Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam, who has held elected office in Florida since 1996, quickly built up establishment support and raised millions of dollars. Trump has not endorsed in the race, but he has had praise for McSally.

A Democratic victory in the Senate race could suggest the state could be up for grabs in 2020.

On the Democratic side, the national party would prefer the more centrist former Rep. Gwen Graham, the daughter of former governor and Sen.

Graham's top challengers include former Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine and Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, a progressive favorite endorsed by US Senator Bernie Sanders.

Democrats are hoping the GOP electorate's rightward march and embrace of outsiders result in a runoff win for Tulsa mortgage company owner Kevin Stitt over former Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett.
