Hurricane threat for Hawaii's Big Island extends to include Maui

This satellite image provided by NOAA on Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2018, shows Hurricane Lane south of Hawaii.

A hurricane watch has been issued for Hawaii and Maui counties.

Although it is not certain whether the storm, packing peak winds of 150 miles per hour, will directly strike the islands or just graze them, significant effects from rain, wind and waves are becoming increasingly likely.

Bands of intense showers and thunderstorms surrounding Lane will begin to spread across the state from the Southeast, reaching the Big Island later this morning.

"Hurricane Lane is not a well-behaved hurricane", Ige said in a statement Tuesday.

According to the Central Pacific Hurricane Center, Lane is expected to turn north-northwest, bringing it "dangerously close" to the island chain. In addition, all University of Hawaii campuses were shut down on Maui and the Big Island, as well as Molokai and Lanai.

- The National Weather Service says that Hurricane Lane headed toward Hawaii has been is now a Category 4 hurricane and that some weakening of the storm is forecast over the next two days.

Hurricane Lane is a Category 5 hurricane on Wednesday morning with winds of 160 miles per hour.

The interview coincided with the 65th anniversary of the US-British coup d'état against Iran's Prime Minister, Mohamad Mosadeq. Decades of hostility eased somewhat with the 2015 nuclear deal signed by six world powers, including the U.S. , and Iran.

"A lot of people are comparing the similarities between Iniki and Lane", Kauai resident Mike Miranda told the AP.

Tropical storm-force winds and torrential rain could start arriving on Wednesday.

Hurricane scientist Lisa Bucci took a jarring ride through the strengthening Hurricane Lane Tuesday evening. A Hurricane Watch has been issued for Hawaii and Maui counties, and additional Tropical Storm or Hurricane Watches may be required later today or tonight.

"Everyone on O'ahu should take Hurricane #Lane seriously", tweeted Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell.

The storm was located about 350 miles south-southeast of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, and 505 miles south-southeast of Honolulu, as of the CPHC's latest update. Preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion.

"One thing is for sure, the coast will continue to feel the impacts of swell, gradually increasing with the approaching storm to a peak around mid-week with strong surf (large waves for some of the well-exposed areas)", Warren said.

"Life threatening impacts are likely" to hit Hawaii, regardless of whether the storm makes landfall, NWS said in a statement.

It is too early yet to know whether Lane will be more significant but residents are being advised to regularly monitor evacuation zones and shelters for alerts in the event of having to leave quickly. A high surf warning is also in effect for south-facing shores for Hawaiʻi Island, and a high surf advisory is in effect for south-facing shores for the rest of the state.
