Third day of deliberations set for Manafort fraud trial

Third day of deliberations set for Manafort fraud trial

"I'd imagine they would too", Ellis said, adding that U.S. marshals accompany him everywhere, including an unnamed hotel where he's staying, but jurors don't have that protection. Manafort's lawyers said Tuesday that they would call none, alleging that the government "cannot meet that burden" of proof that would move a jury to issue a guilty verdict. "I don't feel right if I release their names", the judge said.

Trump has called Mueller's investigation, which had cast a cloud over his presidency, a "rigged witch hunt".

U.S. President Donald Trump speaks to the media before departing on Marine One to travel to NY, at the White House on August 17, 2018 in Washington, DC.

There have been specific threats, Ellis said, although he declined to provide details.

The jury also requested that the judge redefine "reasonable doubt". Judge Ellis read the note aloud to court - which asked to leave at 5pm instead of 5.30pm.

Prosecutors said Manafort owned and controlled 31 foreign accounts and that more than $60 million flowed through them from 2010 to 2014.

Donald Trump's musings on the Paul Manafort trial may not have much an effect on the outcome, experts say.

"I think the whole Manafort trial is very sad", Trump told reporters on Friday.

Although the Clarence Valley fire at Bristol Arms Road is burning close to some properties, they are not now under threat. An out-of-control bushfire is continuing to threaten properties in southern New South Wales, despite easing conditions.

Manafort worked on the presidential campaigns of three Republican presidents in the 1970s and 1980s - Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, and George H.W. Bush - as well as Republican presidential candidate Bob Dole in the 1990s.

Mr Manafort managed Mr Trump's campaign for several months in 2016 - and he was in charge when Mr Trump cinched the Republican party's nomination.

"I'm going to do that, maybe five minutes before", Ellis said Friday afternoon, shortly before dismissing the jurors.

CNN and the other outlets' efforts to obtain the means to contact the jurors comes as part of a growing campaign to look critically at this, the first of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's criminal cases to go to trial should Manafort be acquitted of some or all of the 18 felony counts he faces.

On August 17, Trump criticized Mueller's prosecution of Manafort.

But Andres alleged that when the stream of money from Yanukovych dried up four years ago, Manafort financed his lifestyle by securing about $20 million in bank loans in the lying about his assets and debts on loan applications.

Manafort, 69, is accused of providing fraudulent statements to secure bank loans and failing to pay taxes on tens of millions of dollars he earned while advising Russian-backed politicians in Ukraine between 2006 and 2015.
