Shots are fired at U.S. embassy in Turkey amid escalating tensions

An unidentified gunman fired six shots at the U.S. Embassy in Ankara, the Turkish capital, early Monday, striking a guard booth but causing no injuries at the embassy, which was closed at the time, the Ankara governor's office said in a statement.

Earlier Sunday, The Wall Street Journal reported that the Trump administration rebuffed Turkey's offer to release pastor Andrew Brunson if the U.S.

Turkey has promised to respond to the sanctions and resisted releasing Brunson, who is accused of being involved in the 2015 coup attempt, unless the United States makes concessions to Turkey.

The US embassy in Ankara and the consulate in Istanbul have been the targets of attacks by militants and have faced numerous security threats in the past.

The attack comes amid tensions rising between Ankara and the USA over the detention of Andrew Brunson, an American pastor, in Turkey over terror-related charges. "We thank the Turkish national police for their rapid response", he said.

Authorities later detained one person in relation to the shooting, the state-run Anadolu news agency said, without giving any details.

Erdogan's spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said the incident was being investigated.

A top official in Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party said the attack was a "clear provocation" and that foreign diplomatic missions are guests of the country. Ankara accuses Gulen of having masterminded the July 2016 coup attempt against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Turkey has been struggling to halt the decline in the lira amid a diplomatic spat with the USA that has seen tariffs' levied by both sides.

Turkish police have launched an operation to trace the vehicle used for firing. "The attack aimed at our economy has no difference from an attack aimed at our call to prayer or flag", he said.
