Thursday morning, Franklin's publicist announced the Detroit singer had succumbed to pancreatic cancer at the age of 76, inspiring fans across the world to break out their favorite tracks in her catalogue.

A few months over 46 years ago, Aretha Franklin released one of the greatest songs ever recorded, one among the many in that pantheon for which she is responsible. In 1987, she became the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

She got a musical education from gospel greats: the Staple Singers, the Soul Stirrers, James Cleveland and The Mighty Clouds of Joy.

With the announcement of Franklin's death from pancreatic cancer, many of her collaborators paid tribute. Beyoncé dedicated her August 13 Detroit concert with Jay-Z to the soul legend.

"Critics always talked about the gospel feeling in Aretha's voice so it was a very big deal when she finally made a proper gospel album like "Amazing Grace, '" Carpenter said". She also had a seven-year relationship with her road manager, Ken Cunningham.

Rapper and fashion designer Pharrell Williams shared a 1972 Los Angeles recording of Franklin singing Mary Don't You Weep.

She won 18 Grammy Awards and had global success with songs like "Respect", "Spanish Harlem" and "Natural Woman". "We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family", he said.

'She helped us feel more connected to each other, more hopeful, more human. Davis called her "truly one of a kind".
