Emergency declared in Virginia prior to 'Unite the Right' rally

The company's announcement came just days before a second "Unite the Right" rally is scheduled to take place in Washington, DC and almost one year after the Charlottesville rally on August 12, 2017, during which protesters - including white supremacists - gathered to protest the removal of Confederate statues.

The 2017 Charlottesville rally, which drew white supremacists and neo-Nazis, was originally meant to protest the planned removal of a statue depicting Confederate General Robert E. Lee that still stands. The group took part in last year's Unite the Right rally, but has not announced plans regarding Sunday's rally in Washington, D.C.

Authorities are planning a massive law enforcement presence in Washington, D.C., and Charlottesville, Va., this weekend ahead of expected protests.

Heyer was killed when James Alex Fields Jr. allegedly drove his auto into a crowd of protesters. That weekend, two Virginia State troopers were also killed as their helicopter crashed into a nearby forests.

Police plan to close more than a dozen streets in downtown Washington and cordon off broad sections of Lafayette Square to separate the opposing demonstrators, said Peter Newsham, chief of the Washington Metropolitan Police Department. Uber, Lyft and Airbnb are allowing drivers and hosts to deny service to potential customers who participate in the rally in Washington, D.C.

The increased police presence is meant to serve as a "deterrent to anyone who would want to come into the community and exercise their First Amendment rights in a way that would violate someone else's First Amendment rights", Brackney said.

"We want to see students, activists and members of the global community rising up to fight fascism in their universities, local communities, and all institutions that uphold white supremacy and fascism", Majuto said. Safety and security are always a top concern as restaurants are public spaces. Events over the decades focused on civil rights, LGBT rights, abortion, ending the Vietnam War and other issues have drawn crowds well into the hundreds of thousands.

Unite the Right said on its website that supporters will march from a nearby subway station to Lafayette Park at 5pm (2100 GMT).

Jason Kessler, the primary organizer of last summer's rally, sued the city of Charlottesville after it refused to issue him a permit for another event this weekend.

A months-long investigation by former U.S. Attorney Tim Heaphy into what happened during the deadly "Unite the Right" rally found that law enforcement failed on multiple fronts, including one that may have led directly to the death of Heather Heyer. But, he added, "The state police is fully prepared to act on any inciteful violence".

"We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry, and violence on many sides - on many sides", Trump said in a short statement delivered in New Jersey.

As the group and other counter-protestors head for the nation's capital, Hogan has instructed Maryland State agencies to be ready to respond and to coordinate in advance with DC officials.
