Mourinho takes swipe at United's detractors

The 2018/19 season gets under way with Manchester United taking on Leicester City at Old Trafford Friday.

"I am still expecting them to be very strong this season, and I actually think that, along with Liverpool, they will be a lot closer to Manchester City this time". Ivan Perisic, the Croatia worldwide, also featured prominently on Mourinho's wish list but it now seems that United's summer transfer business will be restricted to the arrivals of Fred, the injured Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant, signed from Stoke City as a third-choice goalkeeper.

Millions of dollars have been spent, mind games have already begun and fan optimism is at its peak which can only mean one thing - the English Premier League is about to raise the curtain on another campaign which promises to be full of intrigue.

Liverpool FC placed in fourth spot and finished 25 points behind Manchester City, although the Reds knocked the Citizens out of the Champions League thanks to a 5-1 aggregate win in the quarter-finals.

"My view is that first of all is hard for me to believe we finished second", he added.

Liverpool finish pre-season by beating Torino
Klopp has not ruled out captain Jordan Henderson featuring on Sunday despite only returning to training at the weekend. Dejan [Lovren] is in, he had not a very long holiday.

'My view is that first of all it's hard for me to believe we finished second, ' said Mourinho of last season.

Sergio Romero, Valencia, Marcos Rojo, Dalot, Ander Herrera and Matic are all injured for Leicester's visit, while Mourinho needs to check on the fitness of those that returned late from the World Cup.

"So it's hard for me to understand or to feel or to believe that we finished second, which I keep saying that I - and sometimes it's also hard to believe - that I won eight championships and three Premier Leagues". In football you need time to work and players on the pitch to work and we didn't have that until now.

Manchester United have been hit by injuries throughout the pre-season tour of the United States and there are plenty of first-team stars that have only just returned from their holidays due to exploits in the World Cup this summer.

With so much business being done since the end of last season, it has been tough to keep track of who has gone where. I was told that during pre-season it looked like I was saying something absolutely out of order, something insane.
