West Nile Virus found in Brant County

West Nile virus activity is moving east.

The county's Health Unit reports that mosquitoes taken from a trap in the southeastern part of Mitchell have tested positive for West Nile virus.

Lambton Public Health is encouraging residents to continue taking usual precautions to avoid mosquitoes and bites, as well as reducing mosquito breeding grounds around properties by eliminating standing water.

The chances of getting West Nile Virus from an infected mosquito are low.

According to an announcement from Gov. Dannel P. Malloy's office, the rates of mosquitoes carrying West Nile have been much higher this year. Approximately 20 percent who become infected will develop a fever with other symptoms such as headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash.

Residents can reduce the opportunity for mosquitoes to breed and multiply.

DCHHS Medical Director Dr. Christopher Perkins explains that proper mosquito bite prevention involves DEET sprays. Of the 26 Dallas County residents infected previous year, two died from the mosquito-borne illness.

Minimize time spent outdoors, especially at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
