Samuel L. Jackson & Cobie Smulders Join Spider-Man: Far From Home

But lest we forget, the last time audiences saw Jackson and Smulders' characters, Nick Fury and Maria Hill, they had been dusted out of existence by Thanos just after calling Captain Marvel down to Earth to help using a special space pager. Jake Gyllenhaal is also all but confirmed to play Quentin Beck, better known as his evil, mind-bending alter-ego, Mysterio. Now we know a couple of former S.H.I.E.L.D. agents are suiting up again to meet Spidey on the big screen for the first time.

The sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming was already a much-anticipated film thanks to the return of both fan favorite Tom Holland in the title role and a supporting cast that still includes Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, and Marisa Tomei.

Far From Home will be released after Avengers 4, though, so it's a safe bet this means they are both resurrected in that film, or Far From Home takes place before Infinity War.

Though this may be a spoiler for anyone who missed out on Avengers: Infinity War and/or managed to click on this article without reading the headline, most are aware by now that Marvel's massive cross-over-palooza ended with the Mad Titan Thanos (Josh Brolin) Infinity-snapping half of all life in the universe into a dusty ash-pile nothingness.

As of right now, Spider-Man: Far From Home is shooting in Europe, which is fitting since the film is set in Europe (you know...far from home), and will see Peter tackling his issues (and presumably Jake Gyllenhaal) overseas. If so, the trauma could be explored in Spider-Man: Far From Home next year. One such recently discovered element - spotted, as always, by an eagle-eyed Redditor - has larger implications on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Of course, we'll have to wait until Avengers 4 to learn how Nick Fury, Cobie Smulders, Peter Parker and countless others return from the dusty afterlife - and why it is that Tony Stark isn't playing mentor any longer.

Jackson is ready to swing with Spidey.
