Investigation into death of baby found in East River; parents unknown

Authorities investigate the death of a baby boy who was found floating in the water near the Brooklyn Bridge in Manhattan, on Sunday, Aug. 5, 2018, in NY.

Tourists from Oklahoma made the disturbing discovery and waved police down around 4 p.m. Sunday. Her husband, Monte, waded into shallow water near the Manhattan shoreline, retrieved the baby and started CPR.

The parents have not been found.

"Monte Campbell told The Times he was on hold with 911, "...and at that point I decided I had to go make sure.

A baby boy was found unresponsive in the East River near the Brooklyn Bridge on Sunday, prompting New York City officials to launch an investigation into the child's death.

Police said a pedestrian flagged down two officers in a patrol auto near South and Dover streets around 4 p.m. and told them there was a child in the water.

Police are investigating after a baby boy died shortly after being pulled from the water near South Street Seaport.

He practiced CPR on the baby until an ambulance arrived and brought him to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"My mom, she was out here and she was kind of just looking in the water, and she calls my dad over and says 'there's a baby in the water!'" Austin told ABC 7 in NY. She said the baby was floating about 30 feet offshore.

The cause of death is unclear, and his body showed no signs of trauma.
