Sunita Williams among 9 astronauts named by NASA for first commercial flights

NASA announced the nine names of the astronauts that will get in the Crew Dragon and Starliner capsules for both the test flights and actual first missions.

"What an exciting and incredible day", Jim Bridenstine, NASA's administrator, said at the announcement at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston.

U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed the news, and tweeted, " NASA, which is making a BIG comeback under the Trump Administration, has just named 9 astronauts for Boeing and SpaceX space flights.

He said the announcement advances "our great American vision" and strengthens America's leadership in space. NASA says this was actually not a requirement for certifying the vehicles, but both companies opted to perform end-to-end flight tests to ensure the entire integrated system worked properly. Public and private entities joining forces for these proto flights means the crewed test phase could be of the most monumental leaps in human spaceflight since NASA's Space Shuttle Program was retired in 2011. For the seven years since then, NASA has relied on Russia's pricey Soyuz spacecraft to ferry American astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS). Mann joined the astronaut corps in 2013, and she is a lieutenant colonel in the Marine Corps and test pilot.

As per NASA, it is an endeavour which will return astronaut launches to the United States soil for the first time since the space shuttle's retirement in 2011.

Boeing has leased two of NASA's old space shuttle hangars at KSC, known as Orbiter Processing Facilities, to build its Starliners and house two small robotic X-37B space planes it built for the Air Force. "We are yet to know the final dates for the mission".

The process will begin with uncrewed flight tests as early as late 2018.

"This is the stuff of dreams", Glover said Friday during an event at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.

Bob Behnken: Behnken is a native of St. Ann, Missouri. While in the Air Force, he flew in 55 combat missions over Iraq.

LeBron James to produce Showtime documentary series titled ‘Shut Up and Dribble’
Showtime president and CEO David Nevins announced the news at the TCA summer press tour on Monday. Steele said, "He's made a commitment of $41 million to this community and helping these kids.

SpaceX is gearing up to send humans into space for the first time.

Douglas Hurley calls Apalachin, New York, his hometown.

This is also the first time that USA private companies will handle this routing, since NASA asked Boeing and SpaceX in 2014 to develop new launch systems to take over in 2019.

In addition to unveiling the test launch rosters, Bridenstine also revealed the crews of each spacecraft's second flight, which will ferry NASA astronauts to the International Space Station.

Nasa "has contracted six missions, with as many as four astronauts per mission, for each company", the agency said.

Josh Cassada: Cassada grew up in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. In 2013 and 2014, Hopkins spent almost six months aboard the ISS, logging almost 13 hours of spacewalks. He was selected as an astronaut in 2013.

Sunita Williams was born in Euclid, Ohio, but considers Needham, Massachusetts, her hometown.

Williams is a U.S. Navy captain and is the namesake of the Sunita L. Williams Elementary School in Needham, which is expected to open next year. She has spent 322 days in orbit during two missions to the space station.

Victor Glover is from Pomona, California.
