Oscars introduce new award for outstanding popular film

That same year, the Academy also reinstated a "preferential ballot" for Best Picture voting that allows members to rank films according to preference in that category, rather than simply picking one victor. "The winning moments will then be edited and aired later in the broadcast". The Academy has shifted dates over the years, usually from March in the 1940s and 1980s and April in the 1960s and 1970s before settling in February in the mid-2000s.

This complaint has already spawned some changes to the Academy's annual ceremony, most notably a decision in 2009 to expand Best Picture nominees from five to 10 in part because one of 2008's most acclaimed films, The Dark Knight, was left out of the Best Picture category that year.

Earlier airdate of February 9th, 2020.

It is unclear, however, whether the change will come into effect in time for the next Oscars ceremony in February. The Board of Governors took this charge seriously. Regardless of whatever "criteria" they end up outlining, the AMPAS might as well just slap a dollar sign on the trophy's forehead and call it "Most Money Earned" (or "Best Cape").

The letter said the academy plans to "create a new category for outstanding achievement in popular film", adding that eligibility requirements and other specifics "will be forthcoming".

- Atlee Northmore (@southless95)I hope you will still telecast ALL categories including shorts.

- Alice (@alicekatemurray)SERIOUSLY? This is SO disrespectful to the winners! "Popular films are films!"

It's unclear yet whether the new award will be given out at the next show, in 2019, or even what the voting criteria is going to be, but the new gong will likely mean good news for films like Black Panther and The Greatest Showman.

Our guess is that box office has everything to do with it, and that this category is effectively a way for the film industry at large to honor giants like Star Wars and the MCU for pumping billions of dollars into movies. "Every single one was either nominated or won Best Picture with the exception of 'Snow White, ' which was given an honorary Oscar".
