Trump Defends Son's Meeting With Russians as `Totally Legal'

Most recently, Trump tweeted about the meeting Sunday, saying it was meant "to get information on an opponent, totally legal and done all the time in politics". I did not know about it!,' he wrote on Twitter Sunday morning.

Young Trump responded "I love it" when first offered the "dirt" on Clinton, the Democratic nominee.

The biggest question has been whether or not Trump's lawyers should allow their client to be interviewed by Mueller's team under oath, given Trump's tendency to speak off the cuff and say things that are contradictory or untrue.

The meeting has come under intense scrutiny from Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating whether members of the Trump campaign coordinated with a Russian effort to sway the 2016 election in the Republican's favour.

Such testimony by Cohen, a longtime fixer for Trump, would contradict the testimony and public denials of the president, his son, and other campaign officials who've repeatedly said the president wasn't aware of the meeting until more than a year later.

Donald Trump Jr. has previously admitted that the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting was called to obtain damaging information on Hillary Clinton from the Russian government. The president's past comments decrying the press as an "enemy of the people" have incited anger among supporters at Trump rallies, and have been condemned by the United Nations as "strategic" and non-factual attacks that "increase the risk of journalists being targeted with violence".

As the investigation moves along, it will be interesting to note what reaction the president may have, if in fact it appears that Don Jr. may be a target or a subject of the Mueller Probe.

Trump lawyer Jay Sekulow nevertheless attempted to rationalize the 2016 meeting as legal in an interview Sunday on ABC's This Week. Trump seems to be arguing against his own point by assuring us that he had nothing to do with this meeting, which - oh, by the way - was totally on the up-and-up.

Trump's tweet, however, conflicts with a statement that Trump Jr. released to the New York Times in July 2017, as the newspaper prepared to report about the meeting.

When the meeting first became public knowledge previous year, Trump personally dictated a statement for public release claiming that the meeting was called to discuss resuming adoptions of orphaned Russian babies by United States citizens.

"The question is how will it be illegal?"

Why is the Trump Tower meeting controversial?

Sekulow ― whose career has made him an expert on school voucher and religious freedom cases, not criminal law - claimed that meeting with Russians tied to their country's government with the goal of getting assistance to win a USA election was not illegal. "They can also cause War!" This would make sense that Candidate Trump was aware, given the fact on June 7th, Candidate Trump said he was going to do a speech about Hillary Clinton's wrongdoings (the speech never happened). "At minimum, we will make much better Trade Deals for our country".

One of the key concerns for Trump's lawyers is whether or not they should allow the president to sit with prosecutors led by Robert Mueller, the special counsel overseeing the federal probe.
