Dozens shot across Chicago in spate of overnight violence

Chicago, one of the most populous metropolitan areas in the United States, turned into what one paramedic described as a "war zone" over the weekend as 70 people were shot, eleven fatally, in multiple shootings across the city. Many of those victims were wounded in a string of six mass shootings in seven hours early Sunday.

Forty-four people were shot, including five who died, during a 14-hour time span Sunday in Chicago, CNN reports.

Police Patrol Chief Fred Waller said Sunday that in some cases, gang members are using large summer crowds as cover. Police say the violence is unacceptable and they say they continue to take illegal guns off the streets.

Chicago's gun violence drew the attention of President Donald Trump's lawyer, ex-New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who tweeted Sunday, blaming Chicago's longtime "Democratic rule" for the shootings and saying that former police superintendent Garry McCarthy could help reduce the murder rate.

The Chicago Tribune, citing police records, said 25 of the 31 victims were shot during five multiple-injury attacks over less than three hours.

Last week, dozens of protesters temporarily shut down the Windy City's iconic Lake Shore Drive to express their outrage over Chicago's endemic gun violence and call for Emanuel's resignation of the city's mayor.

The youngest person wounded was an 11-year-old boy shot in the left leg on the West Side - also in the Lawndale neighborhood.

Resources at local hospitals were taxed as shooting victims poured in.

Statement: The Time's Up movement tweeted: "We are watching". "Those were mistakes, and I regret them immensely". I recognize that there were times decades ago when I may have made some women uncomfortable by making advances.

Chicago has recorded more than 300 murders in 2018, more than any other US city.

At least 57 people were shot between 5 pm Friday and noon Sunday.

People were shot while riding bicycles, attending funerals, taking part in block parties, and just standing outside.

While Chicago did have a major spike in murders in 2016, with more than 700 homicides for the first time in almost 20 years, murders actually peaked in the city in the 1970s and 1990s; with the city seeing 970 homicides in 1974, and topping 900 murders three times in the mid 90s. A 29-year-old woman was shot in the back, and taken to Stroger Hospital in stable condition.

"If they shoot you, they don't even run", said one man watching police work the scene.

Giuliani sent out three tweets praising Democratic mayoral candidate McCarthy, twice calling him "Jerry".

Misspelling Emanuel's last name, Giuliani tweeted: "He can do a lot better than Mayor Emmanuel who is fiddling while Chicago burns".
