1 dead after explosion destroys part of Italian highway

Police said: "Due to an accident on the highway, an explosion occurred resulting in a fire at Via Marco Emilio Lepido".

Italian news agency Ansa has reported that two people died and more than 60 others were injured following the blast.

Video footage filmed from a auto which had stopped a short distance away shows a huge plume of dense black smoke - followed by a thunderous explosion and fire ball which rocks the vehicle.

The clip shows a huge part of the motorway overpass caved in after an explosion caused a fire to break out in the Italian city.

At least one person was killed and around 55 were injured, 14 seriously, according to local media. "My vehicle is still under the flyover, I am waiting to see if and when I can get it back", Marco Rosadini, from Arezzo, Italy, told Italian news agency ANSA.

Bologna is the lively, historic capital of the Emilia-Romagna region, in northern Italy.

The AP reports a bridge has partially collapsed.
