Khabib vs McGregor set for October 6

McGregor, unquestionably the biggest star in MMA, will challenge lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov in the UFC 229 headliner October 6 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

McGregor (21-3) won the featherweight and lightweight championships during his meteoric MMA career, but he hasn't fought in the UFC since taking the 155-pound lightweight belt from Eddie Alvarez in November 2016.

It is expected that the UFC would set up a presser just for the two of them in the immediate future, to get the promotional ball rolling for the fight. The target of that assault was none other than Nurmagomedov himself.

McGregor was arrested, but was sentenced last month to perform five days of community service, avoiding jail time in a plea deal.

Added to the mix is the tempestuous history between the two which saw McGregor attack a bus carrying fighters including Nurmagomedov to a media event at Barclays Center in Brooklyn ahead of UFC 223.

Once McGregor resolved to return to the octagon earlier this year, Nurmagomedov was the obvious choice to be his next opponent - but the biggest obstacle to this bout appeared to be money.

China's Commerce Ministry said in a seperate statement Beijing's new set of proposed import tariffs on USA goods were rational and restrained.

In a video interview this week, the San Jose-based Nurmagomedov touted his belt and his dominance in pushing the UFC to properly pay him in accordance with McGregor, the organization's leading draw.

In a video announced posted to Twitter Friday, the UFC touted the highly anticipated matchup between McGregor and Nurmagomedov, with UFC President Dana White declaring "The fight is done".

With that backstory in mind, the UFC has plenty of fodder to promote McGregor's Octagon return.

"It's time to go, so it's time to go", Diaz said.

The announcement was made during the UFC's 25th anniversary press conference where the fighting promotion laid out the events for the rest of 2018.
