First Human Case of West Nile Virus in Butte Co: Public Health

No cases of West Nile have been reported in people yet for 2018.

Gov. Dannel Malloy said there's been a rapid build-up of the virus following recent tests, which showed infected mosquitoes rose to levels that were higher than this time a year ago.

A resident in Mead has been hospitalized with a neuro-invasive form of West Nile Virus - the most serious form of the illness, according to a release from the Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment.

Most infected people don't exhibit any symptoms but if you do you should see a healthcare professional immediately. The virus was found in mosquitoes in in 51 of 67 Pennsylvania counties. Symptoms usually develop between two and 15 days after a person has been bitten and can include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, body aches, skin rash and swollen lymph glands. People with weak immune systems or older than 60 are more at risk of the falling ill to the infection.

"Luckily, the summer to this point hasn't been extremely wet, which has limited prime breeding conditions for mosquitoes", Callanan said. "By eliminating places for mosquitoes to lay eggs, using insect repellent and other protective measures, and targeted use of pesticides, we can all make sure Pennsylvanians are protected".

Take extra care to use repellent and protective clothing from dusk to dawn or consider avoiding outdoor activities during these times. Residents are reminded to wear light-coloured, long-sleeved shirts and trousers and use mosquito repellent containing DEET if older than six months of age.

Carroll said West Nile is elevated in the Lehigh Valley this year, but no records have been broken.
