Worldwide PlayStation 4 shipments have topped 80 million

As pretty much every person and their dog owns a PlayStation 4 now it comes as no surprise that PS4 software sales were sky high bringing in 472.1 billion yen in this quarter which is up by over a billion yen year-on-year.

For the fiscal year ending March 31, 2019, the company now expects Sales and operating revenues to be 8.60 trillion yen, compared to the prior outlook of 8.30 trillion yen.

"For Nintendo Switch, hardware sales in every region have been trending upwards since the video game expo, E3, was held in the USA in June", the company said in a statement.

Annual sales are projected to rise slightly, with operating profit unchanged.

Group operating profit rose 23.7 percent to a record 195.01 billion yen, boosted by solid sales of new game titles such as "God of War" for Sony's flagship PlayStation 4 console, the company said.

"The Yoshida team got off to a flying start", said Hideki Yasuda, an analyst at Ace Research Institute in Tokyo.

Carr Fire evacuees return home, some find ashes
Tens of thousands of people across California are waiting to return home or assess what remains of their homes after the fires. Brown Jr. issued an emergency proclamation on July 28 for a number of areas now under the influence of aggressive wildfires.

Hirai spent the past six years salvaging the company from deep financial troubles, leading aggressive restructuring and terminating thousands of jobs, while selling business units and assets.

While the most recent sales period saw a decline in console sales on previous year, the black box still managed to shift 3.2 million units to retailers, overtaking the PS3, of which numbered records stopped, around the 80 million mark, in 2013. From its release to date the console has sold in its millions - 75 million to be more precise.

"Our fundamental challenge is that competitiveness of our products may not be able to meet top-class levels", said Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki, referring to its smartphone lineup.

According to Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Masahiro Wakasugi, even if one were to look past the one-time gains Sony made in the quarter, the company's core business is growing and generating profits.

Sony last updated its figures for PS3 in November 2013, where the console stood at 80 million units; while it's obviously sold more since then, we still don't have anything to tell us that it's ahead of PS4 right now.
