SpaceX and Boeing Manned Capsule Flights Get Official Names

"A new era in American spaceflight": NASA is about to name at least eight astronauts that will fly the Boeing's CST-100 Starliner and SpaceX's Crew Dragon for the first time. Both had been scheduled to take place this year.

Now, both SpaceX and Boeing are each working on spacecraft that will enable NASA to send astronauts with American spacecraft. NASA is also introducing a team of astronauts who will soon fly Boeing and SpaceX vehicles to the International Space Station.

The ISS was created to be resupplied with crews and cargo by the shuttle throughout its lifetime, however, so NASA needed to develop alternative systems.

Numerous team members leading the unique public-private partnership believe the agency is on the cusp of something life changing with its Commercial Crew Program.

"We are confident we identified the root cause and are implementing corrective actions now", said vice president and program manager of Boeing's commercial crew program John Mulholland, indicating that "minor design changes" are under way.

SpaceX and Boeing's new spacecraft are shaping up to be two solutions to that problem. Boeing's is the CST-100 Starliner launched on United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V rockets. Boe, along with launch operations engineers from NASA, Boeing, and ULA, climbed the launch pad tower to evaluate lighting and spotlights after dark.

To that effect, the space agency is getting ready to appoint the crew of the first manned missions to test the CST-100 Starliner (pictured left in the photo above) and the Crew Dragon (imaged right) capsules, NASA disclosed in a news release.

Coupled with the technical challenges inherent in any human spaceflight development program, the systems have been repeatedly delayed and NASA's dependence on Russian Federation extended.

In a blog post, NASA said SpaceX plans to launch its Crew Dragon spacecraft on an unpiloted test flight in November. Dubbed DM-2 (demonstration mission 2, set to follow this month's first demo spaceflight that will be uncrewed), the spacecraft's first passenger test flight is slated for December, per a previous report by the Inquisitr.

No launch date has been set for NASA's satellite fix demonstration, but the mission is expected to happen between 2020 and 2022. However, Boeing announced Wednesday a delay for its first crewed launch. His remarks were widely reported and Boeing spokeswoman Rebecca Regan confirmed the news via email to SpacePolicyOnline.com.

The other four astronauts that NASA has selected, however, aren't yet publicly known. Nominally, two astronauts will be on each test flight.

Observing the climate should be NASA's "top priority", according to 43 percent of those surveyed, who chose from six possible options. For CST-100 Starliner, there will be one from NASA and one from Boeing. Anyone now assigned to a space mission also won't be picked for the Boeing and SpaceX flights, NASA told Business Insider. That might mean two NASA astronauts plus Boeing's (Chris Ferguson, a former NASA astronaut). Separately, SpaceX's Crew Dragon spacecraft for Demo-1 arrived to the Cape in July for final processing.
