John Boyega gets into shape as Star Wars: Episode IX starts shooting

J.J. Abrams attends the South by Southwest Film Festival on March 14, 2016. Abrams is returning to the series to close out the sequel trilogy he started when he directed Episode VII - The Force Awakens, although during that production, he chronicled the filming through the Twitter account of his production company, Bad Robot. Finn's got a new vest, with a blurry John Boyega seen talking to Abrams, who is sitting in the pilot's chair in the Millennium Falcon cockpit. It's harder to tell who's in the pilot seat though-you'd perhaps assume Rey, but the costume doesn't look like her training robes.

The film also stars Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Mark Hamill, the late Carrie Fisher, and Billie Lourd. But joining the crew this time around are newcomers Richard E. Grant, Keri Russell and Naomi Ackie, and returning to the galaxy is Billy Dee Williams reprising his role as Lando Calrissian.

Production is now officially underway on Star Wars: Episode IX, and director J.J.

Disney and Lucasfilm confirmed on Friday that Fisher would be appearing in "Episode IX," which is set to hit theaters on December 20, 2019. Although Kathleen Kennedy previously said that Fisher wouldn't be part of Episode IX, the movie is confirmed to use previously shot footage from The Force Awakens for Leia's swansong. Abrams co-wrote the screenplay with Chris Terrio (Argo, Justice League).
