French skies mostly clear for Friday's lunar eclipse

The time that the blood moon is visible depends on what area of the world onlookers are viewing the event from.

When the three celestial bodies are perfectly lined up, however, the Earth's atmosphere scatters blue light from the sun while refracting or bending red light onto the moon, usually giving it a rosy blush.

For North American residents suffering from an acute case of lunar eclipse FOMO - that is, the fear of missing out on this stunning visual phenomenon - there's no need to fret.

The next lunar eclipse of such length will happen in 2123.

Also, reported on all eclipses worldwide from 1900 to 2100.

Although the lunar eclipse is expected to last 103 minutes, observers in the United Kingdom and Ireland will not be able to catch the start as the moon will still be below the horizon.

On the same day as the eclipse, the planet Mars will be at its brightest as it travels close to Earth.

Sky-watchers will also be able to see Mars burning brightly in the sky, looking like an orange-red star.

Dr Brown said: "As the entire eclipse will occur when the moon is fairly close to the horizon, the main thing to ensure is that you have a clear sightline to the south east".

Although the actual point of opposition will take place on July 27, Mars will be noticeably larger for the majority of the month of July. Unlike solar eclipses, which require protective eyewear, a lunar eclipse can be viewed without specialised eye protection.

Having the opportunity to observe an event like this is quite rare.

The eclipse will be visible from Europe, Africa and the Middle East between sunset and midnight on July 27 and then between midnight and sunrise on July 28 in much of Asia and Australia.

Head media and corporate communications of the Agency, Dr. Felix Ale, told The Guardian: "The Eclipse in Nigeria will start around 6:44pm as partial eclipse and developed into a total eclipse around 7:30pm".

Friday night will see the longest total lunar eclipse so far this century.

Longest lunar eclipse in a century will take place tonight and in the early hours of Saturday.

Why does the moon turn red in a Blood Moon eclipse?

"Hence the appellation of "Blood Moon".

The celestial event, where the moon will line up with the Earth and the sun, will be seen across the United Kingdom and other parts of the Eastern hemisphere. The distance between the moon and the Earth will be around 4,06,223km that night. From Whanganui to Wellington there is just a slim chance of glimpsing the totally-eclipsed Moon as the Sun peeks above the horizon.

Blue Jays close to sending J.A. Happ to Yankees
Brandon Drury was going to be the starting third baseman for NY until Miguel Andujar came out of nowhere to take the job. Happ is a great pitcher and fills a massive need for the Yankees as they pursue the franchise's 28th World Series title.
