CDC issues alert about salmonella tied to chicken, ducks in backyard flocks

Mondelēz Global LLC and the Mondelēz Canada have issued a voluntary recall on Ritz Cracker Sandwiches and Ritz Bitz products from the marketplace. (AMPI) may have been contaminated with salmonella.

Hy-Vee recalled Spring Pasta Salad in July when approximately 20 illnesses were potentially linked back to customers who ate the salad.

Mars Food Canada recalled select Uncle Ben's rice products in eastern Canada, including its Fast & Fancy Broccoli and Cheddar, and Country Chicken flavoured rice, after learning about a possible salmonella contamination.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Salmonella causes about 1.2 million illnesses every year, and food is usually the cause.

AMPI, a dairy marketing cooperative based in New Ulm, Minnesota, said it was recalling "a limited amount of dry whey powder product produced in May and June". The company says it is conducting this recall as a precaution.

The CFIA says the recall, initiated by the Campbell Company of Canada, was triggered by a similar action taken in another country.

Salmonella often makes its way into products like whey through handling.

Powdered dairy products made by Associated Milk Producers Inc. And just as with the other products recalled, whey powder is used in the ranch dressing that is used as a seasoning in the mashed potatoes and in the boneless chicken with the meals.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates salmonella causes about 1.2 million illnesses and 450 deaths in the US each year, with food the source of an overwhelming majority of the cases. "Children younger than 5 years of age are more likely to get sick from exposure to germs like salmonella". The recalls were precautionary; at the time of the recalls no cases of Salmonella related to the snack products had been reported.
