Israel shoots down Syrian fighter near Golan Heights

The source, cited by state news agency SANA, said Israel "targeted one of our warplanes.in Syrian airspace".

Reuters said Israel previously rejected a Russian proposal to keep Iranian forces about 80 kilometers from the frontier. So-called "deconfliction measures" have been in place between the two countries since Russian forces entered Syria on behalf of President Bashar al-Assad.

It is reportedly the first time Israel has shot down a manned Syrian aircraft since 2014.

Syria acknowledges that Israel shot down its fighter, but it rejects accusations that the aircraft entered Israeli airspace, according to the Jerusalem Post.

According to the source, the plane was attacking terrorists near the community of Sayda in the Wadi Yarmouk area of the Daraa province.
