Don Kohles, 91, was walking into the supermarket when he saw a vehicle being chased police crash into a pole just outside.

"I ducked behind the 4 foot retaining wall in the parking lot and three LAPD officers ran over, knelt behind it right next to me and opened fire", said Mr Field. Videos from the scene show police officers swarming the store as shoppers and employees ran out. He told CNN she had worked at the store for four to five years.

Mayor Eric Garcetti confirmed one woman was shot and killed inside the store.

Trader Joe's employee Melyda Corado died during the standoff, though her cause of death remains unclear. Some employees climbed out a back window on a chain ladder.

The LAPD also tweeted out: "There is an active police incident at the Trader Joe's near the intersection of Hyperion Ave and Griffith Park Blvd in #Silverlake". Authorities said he asked for handcuffs prior to exiting the store.

A feud between a man and his grandmother over his girlfriend staying at the grandmother's home exploded into violence that ultimately led to him taking dozens of people hostage inside a Los Angeles supermarket, a relative said Sunday.

"A male suspect. become involved in a family dispute which resulted in him shooting his grandmother and a female at the scene", Sergeant Barry Montgomery told reporters. He crashed the vehicle attempting to escape police, firing at officers before running into the nearby grocery store. Officers tracked the auto, gave chase and exchanged gunfire with the man, who crashed into a pole outside the supermarket and then ran inside.

Gunman arrested after deadly LA hostage standoff
Don Kohles, 91, told CNN he saw the vehicle crash into a fire hydrant or a utility pole in front of the Trader Joe's. Police in Los Angeles are responding to a shooting at a Trader Joe's in the Silver Lake area, according to KCBS.

The Los Angeles Police Department identified the suspect as Gene Evin Atkins, whose bail was set at $2 million Sunday, one day after the incident, on suspicion of murder.

Police officers use a mirror to see inside a Trader Joe's store in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles. Among them was a police officer carrying a small child, he said. When police tried to stop the auto a chase ensued, officials said. Other views from TV helicopters showed people leaving through the front door with their hands up. At the same time, police said Atkins stole his grandmother's auto and forced his girlfriend into the vehicle.

The driver got out and police started firing at him as he ran toward the Trader Joe's. Gunshots were fired during the chase.

"She was the person I loved the most in the world", Corado said.

The LA Fire Department said 10 people were treated inside Trader Joe's with six taken to hospital, with the patients including a 12-year-old boy.

The suspect's girlfriend was taken to a hospital in fair condition.

NBC has learned that at least one employee was instrumental in helping several hostages escape through a backroom.
