Gunman arrested after deadly LA hostage standoff

A 28-year-old man has been identified as the suspect who opened fire and held hostages at a Trader Joe's in Los Angeles after a shooting at his grandmother's house and a police chase. The suspect has been shot and is talking with police negotiators, NBC Los Angeles said.

Police said the suspect, believed to be in his teens, got into a family dispute Saturday, during which he shot his grandmother and another female.

Don Kohles, 91, told CNN he saw the vehicle crash into a fire hydrant or a utility pole in front of the Trader Joe's.

During the high-speed pursuit, Atkins allegedly fired at officers, shattering the rear window of the vehicle he was driving, police said. She said an officer instructed her and another woman parked next to her to duck in their vehicles, where they remained for at least 30 minutes.

At least one officer is believed to have returned fire, Montgomery said.

He took hostages as scores of firefighters and police converged on the scene.

Police in Los Angeles are responding to a shooting at a Trader Joe's in the Silver Lake area, according to KCBS.

The video also showed officers carrying a person who appeared to be injured, as well as people climbing out of a store window and down a ladder.

Authorities said the suspect's grandmother was in critical condition at the hospital and the other woman he shot only suffered a graze wound to her head.

A 22-year-old woman was wounded by glass fragments and later took herself to a hospital, police said. About three hours after he took hostages in the store, the suspect surrendered.

Officers rescued some workers and customers, while the hostage-taker released some himself. "I look behind me and there were two police guys coming with heavy guns, then boom boom boom boom, so I go into TJ's and I see this guy and he comes in".

"After he was inside the store for a little while they had me crawl away from the scene and run away around the corner", Field said.

A gunman who holed up in an Los Angeles supermarket after allegedly shooting his grandmother and girlfriend has been arrested, leaving the Trader Joe's store in handcuffs.

"The bullets were flying everywhere - through the front of the store and across the parking lot", Kohles told the Los Angeles Times.

"This incident remains active", he said.

United States President Donald Trump said that he was watching the "possible hostage situation very closely".

Police said Atkins was shot in the arm during the firefight. Later, a man was seen being led away from the store in handcuffs.

Police said the suspect ended up crashing outside the grocery store and barricading himself inside.
