West Nile virus death reported in southeastern NC

West Nile first showed up in the United States in birds in the Bronx Zoo and in dead crows in New York City. These areas include urban catch basins, clogged gutters, discarded tires, poorly maintained swimming pools, flower pots, roof gutters, and other containers that hold water.

According to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, Northern, South-central, and Southeast Kansas are at high risk, while Southeast, Northeast, and Northwest Kansas are at moderate risk for West Nile Infection.

Mosquitoes in Jackson County, Illinois are able to do more than just annoy residents, some have been found with the West Nile virus. If people who become infected do suffer symptoms, they are typically mild, including headache, fever, nausea, fatigue, skin rash or swollen glands. And in Yolo County, 7 mosquito samples and 6 dead birds have also tested positive.

More information on the prevention of mosquito bites is available on the Division of Public Health's website and through the CDC. While the majority of people infected with WNV have no symptoms, the virus can cause serious symptoms in some people, especially those over 65 years old and those who are immunocompromised.

They're most active in the two-hour span before sunset and generally dusk and dawn.

The Open: Woods makes move, Spieth & Schauffele wobble
But 69 was the low score among the first 22 players out in Sunday's final round as the breeze was blowing 15-20 miles per hour . The group of players level with Woods at five-under also includes the likes of Zach Johnson , Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood.

This is the first batch of mosquitoes that tested positive for the virus in Halton this year. Mosquitoes lay their eggs on standing water. Drain any standing water in your yard each week.

AVOID: outdoor activity at peak times when mosquitoes are most active - early morning and evening. Wear long sleeves and trousers, and insect repellant.

"Take a couple of minutes and make that they're using appropriate and effective insect repellant things that contain DEET 20 to 50 percent", said Hull.

Consider the use of mosquito repellent, according to directions, when it is necessary to be outdoors.
